One important way of respecting a foreign land is to respect the country’s religion. In Morocco, the prevailing religion is Islam. Islam comes with many rules including dress, alcohol, and even taking photos. Below are some aspects of the religion that you should take into consideration to be the best guest you can be.
State Religion: Islam
Religious Customs
Morocco’s official religion is Islam. Almost 99% of the population is Muslim. Local customs and practices must be respected in all religious places. Keep in mind that throughout the fasting month of Ramadan, it is not permitted to eat and drink in public during the day. Consequently, options in restaurants and bars will be limited, and opening times at tourist attractions may change.
Taking Photos
Even though Morocco offers an endless supply of captivating images, always keep in mind that it’s respectful to ask before taking a snap of a Moroccan person. Many Moroccans do not allow photos to be taken as it is forbidden by some Islamic teachings. However, you may find locals who are happy to be photographed – but expect a small token in return. Most importantly, do not take photos of people who are praying, or anyone in uniform. Official buildings which are indicated by the Moroccan flag must not be photographed. Not sure what you can photograph? Just ask before you click!
Clothing:
Out of respect for the local culture and religion, overly revealing clothes (ex. miniskirts or shorts) should be avoided when you’re sightseeing or strolling around town. It is not necessary to wear a head covering or scarf but if you go into any holy places, it will be required.
Alcohol:
In keeping with Islam, it is recommended that you do not consume alcohol in public. However, many hotels and restaurants do serve alcoholic drinks.
It is important as an international traveler to be mindful of being a guest in someone else’s country. If you don’t know what the correct thing is to do, please ask. Tour guides, concierge desks, and locals can give you the information you need to be respectful while still having a great adventure!
