Europe’s Stunning Total Solar Eclipse Builds Excitement for 2027’s “Eclipse of the Century”
Spain's August 12, 2027 eclipse captures by Prof. Rachai & colleagues
TANGIER, Morocco, Aug. 13, 2026 — Millions across Europe witnessed a rare celestial spectacle on Wednesday as the continent experienced its first total solar eclipse in decades. The eclipse transformed daylight into darkness across portions of Iceland, Spain, and other regions, drawing enthusiastic crowds to coastlines, mountaintops, parks, and open viewing areas.
The rare alignment of the Earth, moon, and sun created a period of totality that captivated observers and generated extraordinary demand for travel and accommodations along the eclipse path. In locations with clear skies, viewers watched as the sun disappeared behind the moon, revealing a glowing solar corona against a dramatically darkened sky.
From Iceland, where temperatures dropped and birds reacted as though night had fallen, to Spain, where spectators gathered in anticipation as the moon slowly covered the sun, the event inspired wonder and excitement. Even in areas experiencing only a partial eclipse, such as London, thousands gathered outdoors to witness the phenomenon.
“Solar eclipses continue to unite people through a shared sense of discovery and awe,” said a spokesperson for MTAG. “The remarkable scenes witnessed across Europe demonstrate the enduring fascination with one of nature’s most extraordinary events.”

Looking Ahead: The 2027 “Eclipse of the Century”
For those who missed this year’s eclipse, another historic opportunity is approaching.
On August 2, 2027, a total solar eclipse will cross parts of Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean region. Astronomers and eclipse enthusiasts are already calling it the “Eclipse of the Century” because it will feature the longest remaining duration of total solar eclipse visible from any location on Earth during the 21st century until 2114.
At its maximum, totality is expected to last 6 minutes and 23 seconds, significantly longer than most recent total solar eclipses. The event will occur as the moon is near perigee, its closest point to Earth, while Earth is near aphelion, its farthest point from the sun, allowing the moon to cover the sun for an extended period.
The eclipse path will span approximately 10 countries and pass near some of the world’s most iconic destinations, including:
Tangier and the Caves of Hercules, Morocco
The Rock of Gibraltar
Oran, Algeria
Luxor, Egypt
Mecca, Saudi Arabia
Experts anticipate strong demand for accommodations, guided tours, and premium viewing experiences, particularly in Egypt and Morocco, where favorable weather conditions increase the likelihood of clear skies.
